Brittle Starfish

Brittle Starfish, Ophioderma echinata.

Size: 3-6+ inches, reach 3-6+ inches with maturity.

Brittle starfish are great for eating leftover food and detritus in the aquarium. This starfish species typically resides in the sand-bed under the rocks or in the aquarium rocks and come out during feeding time. These are great scavengers and detritivores for your aquarium clean-up crew. Having stable water parameters and low nutrients (nitrates and phosphates) is needed for starfish to do well in the aquarium. These are sensitive to degraded water quality.

This Caribbean species is considered reef safe meaning they are not known to go after other fish, coral or invertebrate tank mates. They are not known to be predatory like some other large species of brittle starfish like the Green Pacific species of Brittlestarfish but also be mindful of the size of your other aquarium tank mates such as small nano fish species or invertebrates.

A 20 gallon minimum aquarium size is recommended for this starfish species. Colors and patterns vary.
